Black cars
The smart black cars seemed to hold bright promise for this newcomer to Formula 1 in 1973. Don Nichols' team was in those early days backed by Universal Oil Product. Personnel involved included designer Tony Southgate, Jackie Oliver and Alan Rees. The first DN1 was a Cosworth-engined car, with chisel nose and nipped-in waist, which proved a little delicate. George Follmer placed one of the sixth in the team's first Grand Prix in South Africa in 1973.
A one DN1 was bought by Graham Hill for his new team backed by Embassy. But as far as Shadow was concerned it was superseded by the DN3 in 1974. There was an early setback when
Peter Revson was killed in a test accident in South Africa. The other 1974 driver Jean Pierre Jarier, carried on with Brian Redman as a team-mate, then Bertil Roos and Tom Pryce. The pairing Jarier and Pryce settled, and continued into 1975 with the DN5. This really was a competitive car, its performance undermined by incidents and failures.
Another chapter ended as UOP withdrew, and another as Southgate left. Dave Wass took over completion of the DN8 design. Shortage of funds meant that just one car was completed, late and meanwhile Jarier and Pryce raced DN5B. Pryce died in an bizzare accident in South African in 1977.
Alan Jones took his place, while the ineffectual Renzo Zorzi's seat was usually filled by Riccardo Patrese in his first F1 season. With Jones' forceful driving coupled with a little luck things looked up. The Australian won a only Grand Prix for Shadow in Austria. in the British Grand Prix of that At the end of the 1977 season Oliver, Rees together with designers Southgate and Wass, defected to form Arrows, with backing from Shadow's erstwhile sponsor Ambrosio. Legal action soon prevented Arrows racing a largely Shadows-derived car, but that did not help the team in 1978.
The drivers in 1978 were Regazzoni and Stuck, who managed few finishes and only six points between them.
In 1979 Elio de Angelis in DN9s scored onlu three points and Lammers none. The 1980 DN11, designed by John Gentry, recorded only one start and one finish in ten attempts, so it was superseded by the DN12. The first of these was completed as Teddy Yip acquired the fading team, which he used as the basis of this Theodore equipe.
